Paradise Enterprises controls everyone’s lives; they’re kept drugged and compliant, and everyone believes they’re leading perfect, happy lives. Well, mostly everyone. There’s a resistance group, people who have discovered the truth, led by Bill Harvelle.
Anna Milton comes from the family that runs Paradise Enterprises. She’s been trained in the art of combat and is skilled at leading people, thanks to her work as an Enforcer for the company (a necessary job that keeps everyone in line), but she knows Paradise Enterprises has gone down the wrong path and is no longer trying to help people. So she runs away.
It takes some work, but she manages to convince the resistance group she’s on their side and, thanks to her previous experience, she is able to quickly move up to second in command under Bill. When a surprise attack on the rebels kills him, Anna becomes the new leader. She forces herself to be tough and uncompromising in this position (though she doesn’t want to be) so that her family can't get ahold of her for ‘reprogramming’.
Meanwhile, Jo Harvelle has decided to more actively join the resistance to feel closer to her father. She has to prove herself as a good and reliable fighter in her own right, though, and she finds herself trying to gain Anna’s attention and approval. As she does this, she gets to know Anna through their memories of her father. Jo’s surprised, she thinks maybe Anna knew him better than she did, sometimes. They become closer, and Jo breaks down some of the walls Anna's built around herself to keep fighting. They fall in love and fight side by side.
The final battle is brutal; they lose a lot of people from the resistance, but they finally stop Paradise Enterprises and destroy their work. Now that the fighting's done, however, they're not sure what to do with themselves. The only thing they can do is start their lives anew, with no outside influence. And so they do.

Take The Pill - Emilie Autumn
Take the pill that keeps you quiet.
Take the pill that keeps you blind.
Take the pill that wipes your memory.
Take the pill that’s fucking with your mind.
That’s all you have to lose?
That’s funny...
...
You’ll be just fine.
Run Daddy Run - Miranda Lambert/Pistol Annies
Saw that dark cloud coming from a million miles away.
Oh how I’ve dreaded this god forsaken day.
Daddy can you hear the Devil drawing near?
Like a bullet from a gun, run daddy, run.
Help I’m Alive - Metric
I tremble.
They’re gonna eat me alive
If I stumble.
...
Hard to be soft.
Tough to be tender.
Eyes Open - Taylor Swift
So here you are, two steps ahead and staying on guard.
Every lesson forms a new scar;
they never thought you’d make it this far.
...
Everybody’s waiting for you to breakdown.
Everybody’s watching to see the fallout.
Even when you’re sleeping, sleeping,
Keep your eyes open.
Use Somebody - Kings of Leon
Off in the night, while you live it up, I’m off to sleep.
Waging wars to shape the poet and the beat.
I hope it’s gonna make you notice,
I hope it’s gonna make you notice,
someone like me.
Fear and Loathing - Marina and The Diamonds
I live my life in bitterness
And fill my heart with emptiness.
And now I see, I see it for the first time,
there is no crime in being kind.
Not everyone is out to screw you over.
Maybe, oh just maybe they just wanna get to know ya.
...
Don’t wanna live in fear and loathing,
I wanna feel like I am floating.
Instead of constantly exploding
in fear and loathing.
Distance - Christina Perri
The sun is filling up the room
and I can hear you dreaming.
Do you feel the way I do, right now?
I wish we would just give up
‘cause the best part is falling.
Call it anything but love
and I will make sure to keep my distance.
Say ‘I love you’ when you’re not listening.
...
How long till we call this love, love, love?
King and Lionheart - Of Monsters And Men
And as the world comes to an end
I’ll be here to hold your hand.
‘Cause you’re my king and I’m your lionheart.
A lionheart.
This Is War - 30 Seconds To Mars
To the right, to the left,
we will fight to the death.
To the edge of the Earth
it’s a brave new world
from the last to the first.
...
A brave new world.
The war is won.
The war is won.
One Foot In Front Of The Other - Emilie Autumn
We never will forget, and no, we will not forgive.
We fought hard not to die, yet we don’t know how to live.
How do we change our world to what we want it to be?
How do we move beyond all of this misery?
One foot in front of the other foot in front of the one...
